First Friday Public Observing Night at Arbor Gardens

I didn’t say say that. :innocent:

Wow! Time flies. Weather permitting, we’ll have another First Friday Public Viewing event this Friday, April 3, at 1900, at Arbor Gardens Park in Moore.

Sunset is at 1953. The moon will be coming off the Pink Full Moon on 1 Apr, so it will be bright, if visible through the clouds.

The forecast is not good. My weather apps are forecasting 100% chance of thunderstorms that evening.

If we have to cancel on Friday, we’ll try again on Saturday, same time, same place. But the forecast for Saturday is partly cloudy, with 10-20mph winds. So that’s iffy, too.

Check back here for updates!

I’m canceling our public observing vent this Friday, 3 Apr, due to the almost certain clouds, rain and thunderstorms.

The forecasts are better for Saturday, but looks like it will still be partly cloudy at best. I’m going to cancel Friday on our calendar and move it to our alternative on Saturday. But keep watch here, as that event might be canceled due to weather also.

Sounds good :+1:

Just checked the forecasts for tonight. It keeps getting better and better. Now showing clear until around ten or so, then maybe some clouds moving in. Moderate winds lessening as the evening moves along. Temps in the 60s-high 50s.

I’m planning on getting to the park by at least 1900. Maybe a bit earlier. Sunset is around 2000.

Should be a good evening! Much better than dodging tornados, like we would have been last night!

I won’t be able to make it tonight.

Too bad, Casey! It’s shaping up to be a good evening!

I just stopped by Arbor Gardens… It is NOT the muddy mess i was expecting, ground just a little damp. We may have to dodge the spring photo shoot crowd… like we did last year about this time. I would say the sky is 90% clear, at the present time.

Unfortunately I’m not available this evening, bummer. At least I’m getting a good dinner out of it👍

Will be heading out shortly

Gerald, Rachel, Dave, Jim and I all gathered at Arbor Gardens last night. The weather cooperated and it was clear, with gusty winds at sunset, but subsiding as the evening wore on. The temps were a bit cooler than predicted and until the wind died it was chilly. Rachel was the only smart one, bringing her winter coat. Gerald and Dave came ready to go hunting after our viewing session.

It was definitely Seestar night, with 4 Seestars. My Odyssey was the oddball out.

We had a few guests show up early, though they preferred swimming to observing the stars. The ducks kept a close eye on Dave and Gerald in their hunting coats.

Later we had a family that was fishing in the pond come view some DSOs and one perspective club member stayed quite a while. I hope she can make it to the meeting next week.

Several of us tried to image Comet C/2024 E1, but we had a hard time identifying the comet in our images. I tried to capture the comet in a science mission for the SETI Institute, but won’t know if I captured anything for a few days. I would have liked to try to image Artemis II, but it was not visible until around midnight.

All in all it was a very good evening! Thanks to everyone who came out to support it!

The next First Friday Public Observing Night is tomorrow May 1st at Arbor Gardens Park in Moore. Sunset is at 8:16pm and Moon rises at 8:40pm. Venus and Jupiter will be up. Weather permitting I will try to make it.

If Friday night doesn’t look good, It could be switched over to Saturday night.

Does anyone know if the first friday viewing event today is cancelled due to weather?

It’s pretty overcast here and the weather shows it staying that way.

Tomorrow looks to be clear.

Just checked the weather. Looks like clouds tonight, but should be clear tomorrow, so I’m canceling tonight. We’ll have First Friday on Saturday tomorrow, May 2 at 1900. I’m going to change the calendar now.

The viewing tonight should be close to perfect! I’ve got family in town so can’t make it, but I hope we get a lot of club members out for the event tonight! I’m hoping I’ll be able to set up in my backyard later.

I’m planning on getting there around 7:30pm. Going to bring my AVX mount with 8” EdgeHD telescope. Will also bring my SeeStar S50. Is anyone else planning to come out tonight?
