Hope you all have clear skies and great viewing.
We added an extra OKCAC Member Night at CRO on Saturday Aug 10th for the Perseid meteor shower. The weather forecasts for Saturday night are not good so this may need to be cancelled.
Sunset is at 8:24pm and the Moon sets at 11:26pm. Could start seeing meteors as early as 10pm.
I cannot make Saturday night, no matter the weather, but Sunday and/or Monday nights forecasts are looking better. Still partly cloudy, but should be able to see some meteors.
Depending on the weather, Iāll hold an impromptu Perseids Meteor Shower viewing at Bluff Creek Park on Sunday evening.
Keep watch on the Impromptu thread, as it might be postponed to Monday evening. Maybe even both?
Tonight (10 Aug) is still not looking good. I wonāt cancel it quite yet, but will give a go/no go about 3-4pm. Check back to see whether CRO will be open or not.
Iāve looked at the sky at CRO and it is totally overcast. It doesnāt look like it is going to improve any so I will not be going out tonight.
Iāll āofficiallyā cancel this tonight (10 August). Forecast is still clouds all evening, thunderstorms rolling in sometime in the evening. Plus, no CRO member has indicted they will be going to open CRO for all members (including me).
Itās looking slightly better tomorrow evening and/or Monday evening. If it stays at least partly cloudy, Iāll be heading to Bluff Creek Park around sunset to see if I can see some meteors from there. We saw some at First Friday in Moore last week, so Iām hopeful.
Please watch that topic for updates.
Wow, Iāve been so busy I almost didnāt notice that tomorrow is Member Night, 31 Aug!
The forecasts are looking pretty good. Probably clear and mild winds until midnight. Maybe some high clouds moving in for a couple of hours, then on and off the rest of the night.
Sunset is at 2002 and true night begins at 2131.
I do not know if Iāll be able to make it tomorrow night. Iāll post tomorrow afternoon if Iāll be heading that way or not.
Non-CRO members, please check back here to ensure a CRO member will have the observatory open BEFORE you head that way! Itās a holiday weekend and turnout may be low. Iāll try to be there, but no guarantees at this time.
Anyone planning on going out, please post on here that you will be there!
WOW-2!
The weather predictions are way off so far! No rain, and cooler temps
Iāll go out if itās stable by 5pm. No promises, but i will post.
I am hesitant about going out but have packed up my gear just in case
Iāll not be going out this time. I never leave the house for memorial or labor day weekends, lol. Just not worth the headaches
Yeah, I understand bad holiday weekend traffic!
Hopefully everyone is at their destination and enjoying the evening. Shouldnāt be bad driving home later anyway.
Now if we can just get some clearer skies out there. Fingers crossed.
Iāve decided to NOT to go out. Cloud movement is SW to NE over the area bringing up more clouds, instead of West to East bringing clearing.
Astrospheric just updated, showing clouds until midnight, then clearing. Weather Underground showing clouds until 10 or so, then clearing to maybe mostly clear, until the early morning hours. Astrospheric is usually pretty accurate.
So I definitely will not be going tonight.
Iām going to officially cancel this by 6 if I donāt see a CRO member saying they will have it open. I donāt want non CRO members going out to the find the gate locked.
++++++++++++++
No CRO member has indicated they will open CRO tonight, so Iām āofficiallyā canceling tonightās Member Night.
++++++++++++++
I changed the title of this to better indicate that āMember Nightā means ALL club members, not CRO members only. CRO members donāt need a Member Night, they can go to CRO any time. Thatās the benefit that the additional CRO member fee gives us.
Member Nights are for everyone. Only one CRO member needs to be there, to open the observatory for everyone else. Though ideally weāll have several CRO members there that can open up the big telescopes for all members to use.
Itās also a great time to bring prospective members, and guests, out to the observatory to enjoy the night sky. Iāll emphasize this at the next meeting to try to get more interest in All Members Nights.
This upcoming weekend (the 6th and 7th) are looking like good nights to go out to CRO, expect to see me there potentially both nights
Chris is right! Saturday night Sep 7th is looking great for CRO! Clear skies and light winds!
Sunset is at 1952. True night begins at 2120. The moon is a Waxing Crescent at 21.5% and sets at 2159.
Please post on here if youāre planning on coming out!
I mostly likely will be going out Saturday. Iāll post on here if Iām going and if Iāll stop for dinner at Swadleyās in El Reno on the way.
I am planning on attending. Its looking like it will be great weather so far.
Iāll be there with a buddy and my new CGXL 1400!
Wow what a scope. Id love to look through one of those.
