I plan on coming out for this one. I’ll arrive about 5:30. It will be very cold but we should have clear skies for some great viewing. The C14 will be open and is out of the wind. I can offer training, as well.
The building will get warm and there are the makings for plenty of hot drinks!
Come out and enjoy some of the clearest Winter skies!!
Hello! New member here. My son and I are thinking about driving up there for the first time tonight but wondering if we are too late. Is it ok for me to drive up there with the headlights?
It was a true “planet parade” night with crystal clear viewing through the C14! Dave and I managed to catch both Mercury and Venus before the sun set. Unfortunately none of the other members had arrived. But Saturn was next and showed up nicely in the twilight. The Macy family took it all in with us.
Next we could clearly make out Uranus and Neptune as tiny discs. The air was crystal clear with almost no shimmering. As the evening progressed, new member Ella and her son arrived. We looked at clusters like M41, and then M42. The gaseous nebula glowed brightly in the almost perfectly dark sky. We looked at Alcor/Mirak double, and returned to Jupiter pushing up the power with the 10mm eyepiece. We also looked at the moon’s terminator and got an upclose look at several craters Everyone was pleased with the show!
Dave and I closed the C14 about 10:45 after most members had left. I left at 11 leaving the intrepid astrophotography buffs to continue gathering data. It seemed to me that everyone had a enjoyable evening in spite of the cold.
Definitely an excellent night. We seen a lot of Satellites go over. Tiangong space station made a very good pass almost straight overhead. Here are a couple of shots from last night. Eyepiece picture of the Moon and NGC 2903 Spiral Galaxy in Leo.
