Exactly, what they think would happen? 
I know the intent was to knock it off of its original trajectory, but why are they surprised by the added bits and pieces? Why wouldn’t it after being slammed into by another object?

I suspect this was expected by the DART project folks, but maybe not by the UCLA folks. Higher education just isn’t what it used to be.
