The last three nights I’ve participated in a campaign by the SETI Institute and Unistellar company, hopefully capturing data on the Disintegrating Exoplanet, BD+05 4868 Ab. Many folks seem interested in this, so here’s some more information on it. The Keck Observatory asked for assistance in collecting data on it from SETI and the worldwide network of Citizen Scientists using Unistellar telescopes. The Keck telescope was observing in it at the same time we were, at least during the night there.
Here’s why the exoplanet BD+05 4868 Ab is being destroyed by its sun. Found this graphic on the results reports on the observations done on it on 13 Aug. The outer dotted ring is the distance that Mercury orbits around our sun. The inner blue circle is the exoplanets orbit, and the star in the center is, well, it’s the star.
No wonder it’s being ripped apart by its own sun!
Here’s a couple of fairly good articles on the star and the exoplanet if you want to know more about it.
