Tent Stakes

What is the the soil like at Okie-Tex as far as the type of tent stakes people use? Can I use yellow platic stakes or would metal be better or even some type of screw in stakes? Thanks in advance!

Don’t use plastic. I use 8 inch spikes from the hardware store.

Plastic stakes break. Thin metal pins break. Like Brad, I use big, heavy duty nails or spikes. I have some very heavy duty metal traditional tent pegs that also work, though I’ve bent a couple of them, too. Haven’t tried screw in stakes.

I buy the heavy nails in the sporting goods section of Walmart. They have plastic holders to secure the ropes on them. Though I’ve broken at least half of those.

These:

Or these:

And bring a minimum of a hand sledge to pound them in. There’s a hard layer under the soft topsoil. You’ll be hammering all day to get them through it with a claw hammer.

Huh. I guess Walmart doesn’t trust us. But the links work. They’ll take you to a page where you have to press and hold the button for a few seconds, to prove you’re human I guess, then it’ll take you to the page. Both stakes have always been in stock when I’ve gone to get more.

Thanks, guys!

I use a surplus military tent stake. You can find them on the internet.
