Telrad advice, replacement, questions

Hi folks, I am moved into my new (old) house in Bethany and getting my telescopes out. Both of my telrads are nonfunctional. Batteries were left in one and it’s corroded to bits. The other looks fine but does not work. They don’t look complicated but for the life of me I can’t get them working.

Q: Are there schematics available for fixing these up? Are there new cheap pointer gizmos that are better?

What type of battery do they use? The old 9v or the newer AA batteries?

Bring them out to the Novice night on Saturday. We can take a look at them.

Thanks Dave. They use two AA batteries. Novice night sounds good. I’ll try to make it.

After a great deal of faffing about, both telrads are fixed and working great. The issue in both cases was the battery holder. One had obvious corrosion. I snipped it out and tested the telrad holding two batteries together. It worked. So I replaced it with a new 2xAA battery holder from Amazon. The other did not have obvious corrosion, but I replaced it anyway while I had everything on the table. To my surprise it lit right up. So both telrads are working fine again. Hooray!
