Headline: Edmond, OK. STEM for 5th Graders

16-Apr-2026 arrive at 9:00 am

Washington Irving Elementary School
18101 North Western Avenue. (near the corner Western and 178th (or 2nd st.)
Enter on south side of building and park in rear near chain link fence.

5th Graders learning about the solar system.

Plan is to have a couple of scopes viewing the sun with solar filters on your scope and if we have more than my own, it would be great to have higher mag shots of sun spots.
Randy Collica will be giving a presentation to the 5th graders in the 5th grade pod in the class area about what astronomers do. You can contact Randy at rscollica@aol.com. Will post a rain date when I get one from the teachers.

@Randy , The club owns a small (60mm) solar telescope,

Lunt - LS60THa Hydrogen-Alpha Solar Telescope (which I presently have checked out (OTA only, ))

If you would like to use it for this purpose, simply link in our quartermaster, @Chris Petroff (to formally check it out in your name) and I’ll make a convenient handoff to you (or back through Chris according to his protocol.)

Chris is responsible for keeping track of who has checked it out.

Randy, Can I help? I would be happy to set up a Seestar 50… for Solar viewing.

That would be great Jim. I’d say to arrive about 8:30 when the car line of parents start to slow down. Parking on the south side of the school back my the chain link fence is best.
