Star Party at Black Mesa State Park the night AFTER OTSP ends - Saturday 10/17 -6:30 PM

We’ve begun a new tradition as OTSP ends. Several of us move to camp over at Black Mesa State Park on Saturday night, October 17th. We gather at the observatory Dome near the playground and hold a smaller version of OTSP for the campers who are already filling the park with reservations as it is Fall Break for most Oklahoma Schools. We explain about why Black Mesa has been designated a Dark Sky Park, show participants how to use simple star charts, and then use them to identify the “cast of thousands” that begin to appear in the skies above us (weather-permitting). Some of our Club members set up telescopes to provide views of the deep sky objects. We end around 11 PM to allow folks to observe on their own.

If you will be available to run a scope, help folks learn how to use the simple Star Charts, teach an observing skill, or share stories of the Night Sky, please sign up below. Please try to sign up for a campsite (tent, RV, etc.) or PM me and I’ll share how to contact Dillon Cochran, Park Manager.
Thank you!

There is an observatory there???

They have an observatory dome in the field where they have public observing events. As far as I know they are not using it to house a telescope. Right now it’s just their to advertise astronomy.

Correct. Ken Mason was fixing it up until Polly left. Future plan remains to be determined. It is used as a gathering point for Outreach events. It has been broken into so we keep the scopes donated by the club in another location in the park where they are secure and kept dust free.

That is interesting, thanks. Shame it got broken into.

When I stopped there to dump my tanks 2 years ago I was surprised at the red lights at the bathrooms, I didn’t know they were making the place dark sky friendly.

How do the skies compare to camp Billy Joe?
