Request for Referrals: Sandbur Treatment at Cheddar Ranch Observatory

Tom Graham is seeking referrals to a licensed, experienced herbicide applicator to address a significant sandbur infestation at the Cheddar Ranch Observatory property, located about 15 miles southwest of Watonga, OK.

The project area is approximately 3 acres of Bermuda on sandy, non-irrigated soil. The land is rural, has no livestock, and is not grazed or baled.

The Club will consider a 1–2 year treatment program, with the plan of selecting a contractor before the end of the year. Initial herbicide applications would begin early in 2026.

Bids should include:

• Proposed herbicides and application rates
• Method of application
• Number of treatments and estimated dates

Members with recommendations for qualified professionals are encouraged to reach out.

How about asking Dr. McCrary for a recommendation?

@BillMurrell, Great idea! Our President, @Ron3Mc has aleady messaged him (Justin McCrary, DVM) for his ideas, experience and to be a good neighbor.

This post was created prinarily to see whether any of our club members might happen to be in this business.

In case you happen to see someone on camera at CRO today (or tomorrow)…

I am expecting two weed control companies to do a drive-by today at CRO.) I”m hoping to get a bid from both.

I offered to meet them, but they said it wasn’t necessary. At a minimum, they will park their truck at the entrance gate and may walk the field.

(And Zac from Wheeler Brothers Feed in Watonga already did the same at noon yesterday.)

I expect SWAT Pest and Weed Control out of Watonga to be onsite at CRO this afternoon to measure the property and submit a bid for sandbur
control.

If any of our club members are in the weed control business and are willing to bid to treat the 3 acres at CRO for sandburs, please contact me ASAP. We have not yet received at least three conforming bids as we had hoped. (Despite having checked with at least 8 companies and having sought referrals through all of the recommended sources.)

Nothing more is needed at this time.

The Board has selected a professional service and their herbicide applications will begin as soon as beneficial — and early in 2026.
