OKCAC Club Meetings for 2026

Club meeting is this Friday August 14th. I’m not planning to bring much Club merchandise other than some 2027 Deep Space Mysteries Calendars, Short sleeve Club T-shirts and a couple of Club ball caps. If you would like something, please let me know what you would like and in what size. I will bring those items. If you are a CRO member and need a key please let me know.

Tomorrow September 11th program will be a Zoom presentation by Astronomy and Physics teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Kyle’s presentation will be titled, “Measuring the Stars”

A skilled and engaging teacher, Kyle Jeter often gives presentations to the general public which he greatly enjoys. Because of the range of interests of our Oklahoma City Astronomy Club members, Kyle decided to talk about, perhaps, a slightly more challenging subject - how do we know what we know about the stars? In this presentation, he will conduct a basic walk-through of the various techniques that Astronomers use to measure the speed, brightness, temperature, and distance of celestial objects. This will include a discussion of the Doppler Effect, the magnitude scale, Blackbody Curves, the parallax effect, and the inverse square law among other things.

There will be no meeting on Friday, October 9th as many of us (including Waylon Troyer) will be at
the Okie-Tex Star Party at Camp Billy Joe, Black Mesa. AND it is OU-Texas weekend.
However, we will meet via YouTube on Friday, October 16th. Special Treat! When Danny finalizes our
Friday Night OTSP speaker, all Club Members will be sent a YouTube link so that you can hear our
Friday night talk. So watch for the October Gazette Newsletter and and Club Meeting emails so
you can join in the fun! We will also make announcements about the upcoming Club Elections in
November. If you are interested in running for office, please contact our President, Brad Ferguson
(brad.ferguson@okcastroclub.com).

Title: How Did Everything Get Everywhere?

Welcome to the newest member of the OU Department of Physics and Astronomy Department - Dr. Sergio Martin-Alvarez!

Dr. Sergio is interested in how cosmic structure emerged and evolved, with a particular focus on how galaxies form and acquire their observed properties across cosmic time. Galaxies are extraordinarily complex systems, shaped by many interacting physical processes operating across a vast range of spatial and temporal scales.

This field of research is entering a particularly exciting era: by looking back toward the first galaxies and revealing unexpectedly rich galaxy populations, JWST has challenged us to explain how the first galaxies formed so rapidly, and how they connect to those observed at later times. With a new generation of observatories on the horizon, including Roman, Rubin, the Extremely Large Telescope, SKA, PRIMA, and the ngVLA, we need detailed models more than ever to understand these complex systems.

Dr. Sergio uses numerical simulations, theory, and synthetic observations to uncover the physics that drives this evolution. His research focuses on magnetic fields, radiation, cosmic rays, feedback, turbulence, and the multiphase interstellar medium, and on how these processes interact to regulate star formation, galactic outflows, and the evolution of galaxies within the cosmic web.
