We have the Club meeting this Friday May 8th. We are not planning to bring much Club merchandise. If you would like us to bring something please let us know what you would like and what size. We will bring those items. If you are a CRO member and need a key please let me know.
Weather events on Friday, May 8th, caused many to miss our Club Meeting.
Hope all are safe.
You missed an outstanding presentation by Dr. Bob Blum on the Vera C. Rubin Telescope.
Just a heads up. A few days ago, the Science Museum of Oklahoma informed us that there is a group who has rented the Museum on Friday, June 12th. We will announce if we will have another facility, switch to a ZOOM Meeting for June, or schedule it on anothe night such as Friday, June 19th. Keep watching and we’ll make a decision ASAP.
Here are other Announcments from our May Meeting for those of you who missed it.
Is this date accurate? Our calendar says our meeting is on the 12th?
The 19th is correct. SMO is not available on the 12th.
I’ll change the calendar. Thanks for pointing out it hasn’t been updated.
We announced this possibility at our May meeting as we were only informed of the need to change dates just prior to May 8th!
At that meeting, we shared the choice of meeting by ZOOM on June 12th or in person at the SMO on June 19th. Our speaker preferred the 19th as did a majority of our Board. Thus we made the decision to meet in person on the 19th of June.
We are guests at the Science Museum of Oklahoma and we appreciate their support. When groups rent the Museum out, we have to meet elsewhere or by ZOOM. We have explored other options. Even Libraries are closed on Friday evenings.
Feel free to inform us of other venues that do not charge us to rent them.
Good morning! Is there an option to attend by ZOOM even during a I-person meeting? I’m asking because I live in Lawton and there will be times that I will not be able to attend in person but I would be able to by ZOOM.
At this time we do not provide ZOOM options except when we have to meet by ZOOM.
Works for me!
Update to Friday, June 19th OKCAC Meeting - 7 PM at SMO
Is Cynthia going to join us in person or via internet?
In person
Just a reminder that the club meeting is next Friday Jun 19th this month.
Please feel free to invite the young folks in your lives to this meeting which will introduce them to Collegiate Astronomy - 2026 - What it takes to be successful and how to prepare.
Colin Anthony Keel will join us in person at the SMO.
Title: Astronomy Education in the Modern Day: The Undergraduate Experience
Background Information: Our speaker is Colin Keel, who is presently a third-year undergraduate at UC Berkeley majoring in astrophysics. He was born and raised in Oklahoma and was a member of the OKCAC until he moved to California.
Abstract: While the college experience is something that many of us are familiar with, a rapidly changing world has resulted in that experience looking much different than it had for previous generations. This is especially true in astronomy degree programs, where new technologies and changing expectations have altered many aspects of the undergraduate astronomy experience. The goals of this presentation are to allow those who have pursued collegiate astronomy education to compare their experience to the modern-day experience, to give those who have not pursued any collegiate astronomy education insight into the general experience, and to show young people what it’s like to take on a STEM degree. Colin will do this by looking at the academics, research, extracurricular involvement, and student experience associated with an undergraduate astronomy degree.
Club meeting is this Friday July 10th. I’m not planning to bring much Club merchandise other than some Club shirts. If you would like something please let me know what you would like and what size and I will bring those items. If you are a CRO member and need a key please let me know.
By any chance are the meetings recorded?
@Gal,
Welcome!
No, I’ve never seen any of the in person recorded. Members often snap ad hoc photos (as I did) and so there are certainly video snippets, but I’ve never seen video recording equipment. (In the COVID/Zoom era, you’ll find some of those still on YouTube.
Tom
