Interstellar space if filled with high energy currents produced by the ‘winds’ of young stars and other powerful emitters, creating fascinating structures that are not only keys to understanding stellar evolution but are fascinating to image. The Pelican Nebula, situated alongside the famous North American Nebula, provides a good example of this premise. On a night of better seeing and transparency this week, I spent the evening photographing the top portion of the Pelican in order to capture more of these enigmatic structures. In addition, I wanted to photograph some of the enormous molecular cloud that backlights the huge spires. Clouds such as these are the foundation of new stars and even planets. This image is a total of eleven hours of integration in the SHO palette.
