Hello from Missouri

Hello everyone, I just registered for this year’s OkieTex.

I have been interested in astronomy and space my whole life, but have only been observing with optics for about 2 years. I work in the industry prodcuing astronomy software. (I will keep the company a secret for now). I have attended one other star party (GCSP '25) and am excited to participate this year.

I am fairly experienced with camping in the easter forests and mountains, but am pretty new to camping in arid and semiarid environments. So any advice in that area will be heeded. Should I be concerned about wildlife? Am I going to wake up with a snake or scorpion cuddling me?

Other than my telescope, what should I bring? At the Grand Canyon star party, everyone used glowing red markers for safety. Is this common at other star parties like Okie-Tex?

Welcome, Ryan.

I know you just registered, here is a link about the etiquette that should help a little.

Lights after dark are restricted to red light only. You can cover a regular flashlight with red cellophane or purchase red lights.

The area is remote and has lots of wildlife. Scorpions and rattlesnakes have been seen at OTSP. The area is also home to black bear, mountain lion, antelope, turkey, deer, bighorn sheep, and tarantulas. I am not aware of bear or mountain lion being seen at OTSP.

OTSP is later this year, in October, so be prepared for warm daytime temperatures and cold nights.

Welcome Ryan,
The critters really aren’t of much concern. Most see us coming and rapidly vacate the area. Bring layers of clothing…it should be cooler as mentioned above! Coffee usually takes care of the bears of the two legged variety. Something that hasn’t been mentioned: WIND. Bring tiedowns for your tent, telescooe, or anything you don’t want to bliw into the next county. It doesn’t always blow, but when it does. It often comes up suddenly and can reach really high velocities. Bug spray, and sunscreen, and a friendly disposition and you will be well equipped.
