2026 JD McCarty Center Camp ClapHans Star Parties- June-July

The OKC Astronomy Club will be holding star parties for the JD McCarty Center Camp ClapHans Summer Camps for children with disabilities again this year. This will be our 11th year working with JDMC holding star parties for their camps.

This year JDMC is hosting a total of 6 summer camps in June and July, spaced one week apart (skipping the week of July 6th). Sharla Bardin, the Public Information Officer for JD McCarty Center, has asked if any club members would be willing to volunteer to bring telescopes and answer questions during star parties for these camps.

The star party for each camp will take place on Monday of that week at the camp grounds, with an alternate of Tuesday if we must cancel for weather.

Each camp session will have typically up to 12 children attending, ages 8-18 plus several adult counselors who also like to look through eyepieces and work with the kids to help things go smoothly. Setup starts at 7PM, and the kids are generally off to bed by 10PM or even earlier.

Anyone with a telescope and who enjoys working with kids is welcome to attend. We have a few volunteers who have regularly attended in the past, but fresh faces are always welcome! There is plenty of space for setup with an open field. Since the kids will only have an hour or so after twilight before they generally need to head off to bed, multiple scopes looking at different objects works very well.

Ideally we would like to have at least two volunteers/scopes for each night, but there is room for at least 5-6 setups easily. Many of these kids have limited mobility with varying levels of physical disability, and a few may have difficulty using eyepieces, so at least some easy viewing options would be best. Chairs, stools, and small step ladders are also good things to bring along. Adult camp counselors will be there to assist.

If you have the ability to provide video camera projection that would be a great bonus, as some children at each camp might not be able to use eyepieces for direct viewing.

The summer camp star party dates for 2026 are:

  • Monday June 8 - (Tuesday June 9 alternate)
  • Monday June 15 - (Tuesday June 16 alternate)
  • Monday June 22 - (Tuesday June 23 alternate)
  • Monday June 29 - (Tuesday June 30 alternate)
  • Monday July 13 - (Tuesday July 14 alternate)
  • Monday July 20 - (Tuesday July 21 alternate)

The JD McCarty Center is located at 2002 E. Robinson in Norman OK, which is on the East side of Norman and away from most lights. The camp sessions are held on the JD McCarty Center campus in their camp area, which is a large open area with a few camp buildings away from the rest of the complex. There is good visibility to horizons in all directions, with moderate light pollution. Generally, we will be trying to limit the use of white light as per general star party etiquette.

How did last night go it looked like it was pretty clear? I don’t think anything is happening tonight even though it’s still on the calendar.

Yes! Chris and I went and had one of our best sessions EVER. We had about 9-12 campers and counselors who stayed our way past their bedtimes! We were using several scopes and the Club Astroscan that Joe brought back from BMSP that allowed them to aim, point, and focus on their own. The conjunction of Venus and Jupiter had them so excited. As the skies darkened we were able to show them several constellations & asterisms. The group asked great questions and could not get enough. We shared constellation stories. One counselor was from Nepal and he shared pictures of the MW from the Himalayas. We made lots of friends.
If weather permits were on again next week!

Is anyone available to come out to JD McCarty Center tonight?
We’re watching the weather. Forecasts do not agree. But as of now, Monday night looks better than Tuesday.
We will post by 7 pm.
Eileen

I plan to be there tonight but lmy travel time is about 25 minutes.

Thanks, Gerald! Because of the time of year, we arrived last week just after 8 PM and it worked well for all of us. The campers are busy early on. We really luicked out with one young man very interested in those “two bright lights in the sky” & Counselors who were VERY interested. Their enthusiasm kept the group going.
It’s looking good for tonight.
Eileen

I agree, looking fine for tonight. I should be arriving close to 8PM. See you there!

We are GO for tonight, folks!

I regret I will not be able to come tonight. I have another situation which prevents my participation tonight. Gerald

Thanks, Gerry!

Officially canceling for tonight. Skies are better than I expected, but forcast is still risky. We can hope for tomorrow.

Looking very unlikely for tonight. Clouds are starting to thin out in central OK, so maybe some hope?

Keeping an eye on things for the next hour.

Canceling for tonight.

We have a scheduled star party at JDMC for tonight!

The weather forecast for cloud cover tonight is interesting, showing a spike to 40% in Norman right at sunset.

Tomorrow night looks much better, and a bit less wind.

Is anyone else planning to go, and if so, do you have a preference for tonight or tomorrow?

Just heard from Eileen that she can’t be there tonight but can make tomorrow, so leaning toward tomorrow night ATM.

Waiting to hear back from Sharla Bardin at JDMC.

Moon rise tonight at 9:00pm, tomorrow night at 9:45pm. Full moon tonight. I can do either but I need about one hour advance notice to load stuff and drive there.

Just heard back from Sharla. She is good for tomorrow night.

Gerald, good to hear from you!
Even tonight, most kids probably would not be able to stay up long enough for the Moon to get up enough to see.

Pushing to tomorrow night for less clouds and more volunteers.

Good with me.
