We had a really good night. I tried getting a picture of Comets C/2025 K1 ATLAS was too low and close to the street lights. C/2024 E1 Wierzchos was almost straight overhead. I think it might be in the picture as a dim fussy. Here some pictures taken with the Seestar S50.
Good shots, Dave! I’m continually amazed at the quality of the images the Seestar S50, and even the S30, can get. Without post processing! It’s definitely the scope to get if someone wants to see if the smart telescope route is the way they want to go in astronomy. It’s not for everyone, but at the price, the S50 is well worth the money. IMO.
The next First Friday Public Observing Night is Oct 3rd at Arbor Gardens Park in Moore. Moon rises at 5:22pm and Sunset is at 7:11pm. Saturn will be up with Neptune very close by.
The forecast is looking great!
I plan to be at Arbor Gardens about 1900. There’s a very short window, 1940-1945 hours, where I might be able to get some science data on 3I/ATLAS aka C/2025 N1. It will be very low on the horizon, about 7-9deg, so probably nothing will come of it, but I want to try.
I kinda pushed it too far last night. Not sure I’ll be there tonight.
Stay off your ankle! Let it heal.
I’m sure that breakfast bowl last night had healing properties in it, but they take time to work.
Well I’m also nursing an injury so will have to bow out as well tonight.
Get better! Both of you!
I plan on attending.
Sorry to hear that, I wish it weren’t so. ![]()
Heal well and quickly!
This event has been added to the International Observe the Moon Night official website. We should have great views of the Moon and Saturn. I’m thinking about bringing out my 8” EdgeHD haven’t used it in awhile.
We had 6 members at this event and about 4 visitors.
Due to a change of the November Club meeting night, First Friday public viewing night at Arbor Gardens Park, has been rescheduled to Saturday Nov 8th. Sunset is at 5:29pm and Moon rises at 8:19pm. Saturn will be up with Neptune very close by.
Got this text the other day looks like we might have some students coming to this event. Just making sure we have some telescopes setup for this event and what time someone will be there?
Hello my name is Lauren Wold and I’m a teacher at Brink Junior high. We have just started a unit on space and I wanted to offer extra credit to students who came out to your astronomy club to look through your telescopes. I wanted to give you a heads up that you may a few extra teenagers. Hope that’s ok.
I plan to attend. Will have a scope or two with me.
I’m planning on being there. I’ll have at least one smart scope. Probably my eV2.
I noticed you changed the time to 1730 so I’ll be there by then. Probably a bit earlier.
The forecast is not looking good cloud wise. Looks like clouds may form late afternoon and it will start clearing late.
I’m going to be there regardless, at least for an hour or so. I’ll be there by at least 1730, maybe a bit earlier.
Well, it was an interesting evening. The forecasters got it right for once. It was completely cloudy all evening, so we didn’t see any stars, DSOs, etc.
But it was one of our better First Fridays, imo. Joshua and LeAnna Carter brought their new Explore Scientific telescope to get some help with running it. We got it set up, but sadly had nothing to look at. But hopefully they learned enough to get it going at home when it clears up. If they still have problems, I know I, and other club members, will be happy to help them get it running!
We also had a lot of students and parents from Brink Jr High School attend last night. I estimate about 25-30 kids and maybe 10-15 parents and teachers. They didn’t get to look through the scopes we had set up to see the universe, but they learned about the different types of telescopes and some about how big the universe is. Their teacher told me they planned to come again next month. Hopefully we’ll have clear skies then.
I counted at least 8 club members there last night, including a few that came for the first time. Thank you to all who came and supported the event!
It took me a minute to figure out why the kids kept coming over to take selfies with my scope. I think it’s cool but not sure random people do as well.
A photo with a telescope was part of their extra credit assignment.
Yep. Apparently they needed proof they were there to get the extra credit.
After the scopes were packed up, several late arrivals took pics with the sign.
